The Saskatchewan Forage Council has completed the January forage price survey which is now available online.

This report gives price and production information on the 2009 forage crop in Saskatchewan.  It is compiled by contacting a wide variety of forage producers and sellers, feedlots, auction marts, by consulting feed listing services, classified ads and online forage price information.  Prices are reported for grass hay, alfalfa hay, mixed hay, clover, straw, green feed and organic hay.

Baling HayCurrent prices for alternative feed stuffs including grain screening pellets, alfalfa pellets and distiller's by-products are also included in this report.

Regional pricing trends, inventory predictions, transport costs and reports from industry stakeholders including the forage seed industry may also be found as part of this comprehensive recap of the 2009 forage industry.

The forage market survey is compiled twice annually in July and January.  Visit our website at http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102952459824&s=256&e=001ZBoz9vUxWMMtt1NKxOXPSZZM8UfuLVzasHSlVHWeLXKOIQxgOZqGRCLydBEe6wdj7-oaBwuUEItwqgChigwnHXKhJZWjjUfzHvganExJuIor0OxOytwexQ== to download the January 2010 report or to view past issues of the report.

Producer Honoured at Forage and Beef Symposium

On Wednesday January 20, 2010, Duane Thompson of Kelliher, Saskatchewan was awarded the 2010 Producer Extension Award at the Saskatchewan Beef and Forage Symposium.  The award is given each year to a member of the beef and forage community who has demonstrated exemplary effort in the extension of information to producers.

Duane Thompson earned his Agriculture Diploma in 1987 following which, he returned to the family farm that he now operates in partnership with his father David, his mother Carol and his wife Paula.  Tee Two Cattle Company runs a mixed farm with 700 commercial cows and a 2000 head feedlot on a land base of approximately 5,900 acres.

Duane's keen interest in innovation resulted in his early adoption several practices including, intensive rotational grazing, pasture water pipelines, alfalfa grazing, alfalfa in crop rotations, grazing and feeding crop residues for wintering their beef cow herd and swath grazing.  Additional to his adoption of these strategies, Duane has been willing to share his experiences with other beef and forage producers in dozens of presentations at workshops and seminars across Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Duane has been actively involved in the beef and forage industry in Saskatchewan as a past director for the Saskatchewan Stock Grower's Association, the Saskatchewan Forage Council and he is currently a director for the Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association.  He and his family are involved in a number of community associations including the Carlton Trail Rodeo Association and their local 4-H club.  In 2005, Tee Two Cattle Company was awarded the Commercial Producer of the Year Award by the Saskatchewan Angus Association.

Congratulations Duane and thank you for sharing your experiences with beef and forage producers to help them refine their management practices.  We look forward to hearing more from you in the future!

$2.5 Million Awarded to Livestock and Forage Research

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud announced more than $2.5 million in funding from the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) for 21 livestock and forage-related research projects.  Forage based research was awarded nearly $725,000 as part of this announcement.

"Saskatchewan has one of the largest livestock industries in Canada and it's important we invest in its future," Bjornerud said. "These research projects will help to provide long-term benefits for Saskatchewan producers at the farm gate."

Livestock projects receiving funding this year include developing new livestock feeds from the by-products of processed grains, pulses and oilseeds, benchmarking cost of production, performance measures for bison producers and several others.

Forage projects include a comprehensive study of cattle grazing stockpiled forages compared to being fed hay in drylot pens, determining the optimum forage carryover on rangeland, development of forage barley cultivars, enhancing plains rough fescue seed development, using legumes in short rotations as well as use of warm and cool season annuals to extend fall grazing.

"Through our research committee, the Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association (SCA) has worked hard to support industry research," SCA Chair Jack Hextall said. "Cattle producers place a high value on research for livestock and forage production and we are pleased with the provincial government's commitment through the ADF."

ADF provides funding to help institutions, companies and industry organizations carry out research, development and value-added activities that will benefit Saskatchewan farmers and ranchers. Detailed information on approved projects is available at http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102952459824&s=256&e=001ZBoz9vUxWMMwa4nb7efC_SfYs8LYPiFMz8Ybws0i6-rMbfuPNLAwsQMTm71rIElaLCw5Y8OiIJ74L3NbnV73kLqU9_c6fZd3zfc8V4V1pdEMy1RZ1Ugb3OzA8toRIoDL.
